The Texas Education Code (TEC) Section 38.003 defines dyslexia as follows:  Dyslexia means a disorder of constitutional origin manifested by difficulty in learning to read, write, and spell, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural opportunity. Related disorders include disorders similar to or related to dyslexia such as developmental auditory imperceptions, dysphasia, specific developmental dyslexia, developmental dysgraphia, and developmental spelling disability.

Identification:  Farmersville Independent School District Dyslexia Program follows the procedural guidelines set forth in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Both Section 504 and the Revised Procedures concerning Dyslexia and Related Disorders from the Texas Education Agency form the basis for the assessment, identification and programming developed by Farmersville ISD. This program is specifically designed to serve students who exhibit characteristics associated with dyslexia.

Farmersville ISD aims to provide the following outcomes for students who are served through the district for Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

Farmersville ISD Dyslexia Program is designed to provide reading intervention for children who meet screening criteria for dyslexia. Intervention services are offered to qualifying students in grades K-12.

These services provide students with the skills and strategies to improve their decoding skills and to improve reading fluency and comprehension.
